Mini-skirts, Bell Bottoms, Nehru Jackets--these were just some of the clothes that were fashion forward in the 1960s. At the same time, more traditional styles didn't fade away, but rather competed with new designs influenced by innovative artists from around the world. These changes extended to hair and grooming, jewelry and other dimensions of fashion--viewed by some members of the public as too challenging to mainstream styles. One's clothing was a sign--to a greater or lesser degree--how much a person embraced new ideas in fashion, or how far a young male or female was rebelling against authority.
Click below to view a PDF of pages from the 1964 Montgomery Ward holiday catalogue, which provides a snapshot of some of the fashions marketed to the public just before the OTHS Class of 1970 finished elementary school. The catalogue pages also include selected toys, games and consumer electronics that were popular and which in some cases reinforced traditional male and female roles.
